The judges are looking for a journalist who can convey practical horticultural information clearly and accurately, breaking down information – for example in steps, lists, guides, product reviews or news items – and engaging, enthusing and encouraging readers to try it out themselves.

For material published between Friday, 8th September 2023 and Thursday, 29th August 2024. Entries may be print, online or a combination of the two.

This award will be made to the writer of the best practical gardening column from a feature or series, published in a magazine or newspaper or website. It will be judged from three pieces of work; the published works need not be from the same magazine, newspaper or website. If submitting news items, the complete ‘News’ section counts as one part of the entry (not individual news items), so submit up to three ‘News’ sections or pages.

Although the judges will primarily be looking at the quality of the writing, where photography has been used to accompany the practical advice (e.g. step-by-step photos), the accuracy and relevance of photos and captions will also be taken into account.

Entry is open to all and is free to GMG members; a fee of £45 is applicable to non-member entrants.
