Biography

​Lecturer in planting and sketching, planting designer and garden adviser. Workshops, talks and courses on planting and hand drawing for members of the Society of Garden Designers, horticultural societies, in gardens and elsewhere. Sketching workshops in lovely gardens such as Sussex Prairies Wild, Hever Castle and Long Barn, where participants engage with nature and find new ways of looking creatively at gardens and planting. A previous head gardener at Long Barn, I still garden hands on as part of garden restoration projects. Down to earth talks and workshops with practical tricks and techniques

Talks: Talks include: • Choosing plants in a changing climate- Choosing plants for different conditions to stack the odds in your favour in an unpredictable climate. Gardens often have a variety of conditions, and we will look at how to identify these to make the right plant choices and create new opportunities. • Demystifying planting design-Lots of tools (not rules) for putting plants together. What is meant by structure, shape and form in the garden? How do we create appealing contrasts, long term interest, what does complementary and harmonious colours mean and much more. • Making the winter garden shine- Looking at gardens as a source of year round pleasure brings opportunities for planting and enjoyment. We will look at bulbs, scent, winter flowering shrubs, stems and lots of plants that put on a good show in winter. • Tricks and techniques for rejuvenating a garden- Drawing on my experience as a garden adviser in gardens ranging from small courtyards to country estates, we'll look at ideas and achievable ways of adding new life to gardens. • Sketching workshops- A variety of workshops on sketching for garden design, to engage with nature and as a tool to assess and improve planting.
