Join a Garden Media Guild visit to a hidden Warwick gem. Many visitors have never heard of Hill Close Gardens – or the 19th tradition of ‘detached gardens’. These are the ornamental equivalent of allotments – gardens with no houses attached to them, which were bought, rented and tended by those who loved gardening.
In the 19th century these ‘detached gardens’ were found around many market towns and cities but land is ‘valuable’ and as more people moved to the cities and more houses were built these gardens disappeared.
However, in Hill Close Gardens you can tour 16 beautiful and individual plots, learn the history of the gardeners who tended them from 1845 onwards and peek inside Victorian summerhouses. There is also a national collection (shared with two other gardens) of hardy chrysanthemums.
Whether you’re a writer, photographer or influencer, there are many different angles and stories here, so don’t miss this opportunity to discover a slice of garden history.
Our host is the manager, Matt Nolan, who himself began as a volunteer.
Photography is permitted.
Tea and cake provided.

For those who would like to squeeze in another garden there’s an additional visit on offer to the privately owned Mill Garden which wraps around a 16th century property with views of Warwick castle.
