Borde Hill

Download Event to Calendar

Join us for a visit to Borde Hill where Jay Goddard is the fifth generation to look after a garden and parkland, established from 1893 by her great great grandfather -  Colonel Stephenson R Clarke.

As Jay herself says she has “big shoes to fill”.  There is a huge breadth to the collection of plants and a deep archive of over 75,000 records.  Jay says the focus of her parents (winners of the RHS Veitch award) was to make the gardens attractive all year round and they enhanced the series of different rooms, including a Rose garden and Italian garden.

As the current generation of custodians, Jay’s new project is the National Heritage Lottery funded campaign “reinventing Borde Hill” focusing  on sustainability, community, outdoor learning and wellbeing in the heritage listed South Park.

Itinerary

The tour will take about 1½ hours and will give the opportunity to attendees to view the 13 garden rooms ranging from the Azalea Ring, Rose Garden, Italian Garden, Paradise Walk and many more. There’s such a great variety of plants from Champion trees, rare shrubs collected by the Great Plant Collectors, and perennials. Highlights for April are magnolias, camellias and spring bulbs.

Lunch.  Please bring a packed lunch and Borde Hill will serve tea/coffee/cake

Post lunch -  see some of the archive material and hear about their two big projects with the conversion of the Restaurant and NLHF grant ‘Reinventing Borde Hill project. Also, as previous winners in the GMG awards for their social media, we’ll hear how they set about producing content for their award winning Instagram account @bordehillgarden.

This will be a lovely time of year to visit as they have a very significant collection of woody plants including magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons – they hold a National Collection of the latter.

Borde Hill are happy for members to take photos and share them on publications/online and they can please credit @bordehillgarden

The garden is open until 5pm and guests can explore on their own after visit.

Do please book if you are keen to visit - there are places for up to 30 people.

As with all our GMG garden visits - we love to see and hear anything you write or record as a result of this visit.   The gardens give their time (and cake) free to GMG members and it’s lovely to be able to show how members can use these visits for their work.
